You are ultimately faced with two options when it comes to furnishing your apartment in college: to rent or to buy. Students struggle with this decision year in and year out; eventually, it comes down to certain factors that lead to the final verdict. And hopefully, this verdict of theirs results in renting.

Here are five reasons why every college student should rent rather than buy furniture.

Time. You are only at school for about eight to nine months out of the year. So why permanently buy furniture that you will only be using for a short amount of time? What will you do with it once school ends?

In most cases, students change living spaces each school year. That means everything needs to be packed up and moved as well. Chances are the furniture that you bought will not match or fit in with the new living space. Then you are stuck with leftover pieces that you will have to sell for much less than what you bought it for.

If you do choose to keep the same furniture, consider shipping expenses. According to ifra.org (International Furniture Rental Association), you should consider these questions: “Do you ship the furniture to another destination at a substantial cost for shipping? Do you know whether or not your new abode, perhaps hundreds or thousands of miles away, will permit you to fit your furniture? What is the likelihood of damage in transit? Will damaged pieces, even though insured, require replacement time that would delay your settling into your new home before settlement could be made?”

Overall, since you will only be living in your building (or house) for a very short amount of time, buying and moving furniture is not worth the hassle.

Speed. You may not know this, but most retail stores do not have same-day delivery for items such as sofas and tables. Students cannot just visit the nearest furniture store to their apartment and pick some stuff out and expect it within the next 24 hours. In addition, if you do want a certain piece that is currently out of stock, then you will have to wait additional time for it to come in.

According to linkedin.com, “Once you select your furniture and monthly subscription, the dealer ensures that the furniture is delivered at your doorstep within a time-frame of 24 hours.” Other companies ensure delivery in 48 hours.

Hassle-Free. Renting puts all of the work on the furniture dealer. This means, according to cort.com, they “handle setup and pickup, no moving-related damages to worry about, [and] no need to borrow or rent a truck or worry about storage.” CORT is one of the nation’s leading furniture rental companies among other services they offer.

When it comes time to get rid of the furniture, the dealer will come pick it up for you as well. You do not have to lift a finger.

Lesser Cost. Naturally, renting anything is going to cost less than buying it. According to ifra.org:

“Why pay a substantially larger amount of money to buy furniture when you have need of it for only a short time? Furniture leasing or renting should cost a small fraction of the money required to buy. In essence, you are only required to pay for the use of the furniture for a short period of time versus acquiring ownership on a capital basis that is practical only for a long-term period of time. In simple language, anyone who needs furniture for a period of time up to approximately two years is much better off in leasing than buying, based upon dollars.”

Rowdy college kids do not have to worry about damages either. The monthly rental plan usually includes the wear and tear cost. However, contact the company you use to clarify damage costs.

Some companies, like CORT, offer special deals for students. For example, their student package offers three rooms starting at $119/month.

Personal Style. Everyone goes through changes in life when their style starts to alter a little, especially in college. Chances are the way your dorm was set up is completely different from how you picture your room in your new apartment. Renting furniture allows you to change up colors and designs from year to year. This way you are not stuck with the same color scheme all of college.

If you tend to get bored of things relatively quickly, then buying furniture is not for you. On the other hand, not regarding style, if a piece simply does not work you can quickly exchange it. Buying furniture may not show you this luxury, or they will give you only a short time period for returns.
