Guide to Summer 2015's Blockbusters

By Kyle Hutchison on July 6, 2015

The early summer blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron: The much-anticipated sequel to the 2012 blockbuster “The Avengers” is a large part in Marvel’s phase two.

Marvel has been working on these phases since the first Iron-Man movie. The goal is to connect all of their superhero movies into one. The phase began with “Iron Man 3″ and included “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” along with the 2014 hit of the summer: “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

“Age of Ultron” is based around Tony Stark’s creation, Ultron, who was programmed to protect the Earth after the events of the first Avengers movie. During its time in the box office, “Age of Ultron” has grossed $3,346,768,736 worldwide. It also ranks in the 25 all-time at the domestic box office.

Next, Marvel reboots the “Fantastic Four” which comes out August 7. Hopefully, you don’t remember the first adaptations of the famous comic starring Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis and Ioan Gruffrud. Well, 20th Century Fox and Marvel have entered into a partnership that is re-hashing the foursome in a much darker light.

In the first “Fantastic Four” series, the movies’ creators produced a campy, goofier version that was laughable. The more recent “Fantastic Four” appears darker and more foreboding from the trailer. The new cast includes Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell. The story centers around the origins of the characters and their powers, but instead of cosmic rays affecting them while in space, they will be traveling to a different dimension.

Marvel concludes its plethora of summer movies with “Ant-Man,” starring Paul Rudd, which opens July 17. “Ant-Man” is the last of Marvel’s phase two movies. The protagonist is a con man who has a chance at redemption when he becomes Ant-Man. Dr. Hank Pym (played by Michael Douglas) entrusts Scott Lang with a special suit that allows him to drastically shrink in size while increasing his strength.

“Ant-Man” is expected to join “The Avengers” for phase three of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe which will ultimately involve the villain Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

We move on from a man who can shrink himself to a familiar park filled with giant monsters. Of course, I am talking about “Jurassic World” starring new blockbuster star Chris Pratt. The movie is a re-boot of “Jurassic Park” except it takes place decades after the park was first destroyed by dinos. The movie centers on the creation of a new dinosaur, and the attempt to contain it.

“Jurassic World” opened June 12th, and has grossed $511.8 million at the global box office. Laden with Easter eggs from the first series, “Jurassic World” is a family movie for past and present fans of the franchise.

Pixar is releasing another film that is bound to be a hit. The movie is called “Inside Out” and is based on the “little people inside your head.” In the trailer, we see the little people inside the head of a mother, father and daughter during an argument at dinner. The concept itself is new and pretty clever. While the trailer shows the people inside all of the family members’ heads, Pixar principally focuses on the emotions inside the little girl’s head. Top billed voices for the movie include Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black and Bill Hader. To date, “Inside Out” has grossed over $200,000,000.

Lastly, the biopic “Straight Outta Compton” hits theatres August 14. The movie chronicles the rise of the rap group N.W.A from the streets of Compton to becoming a cultural icon for the early ’90s. Eazy-E (played by Jason Mitchell), Dr. Dre (Played by Corey Hawkins) and Ice Cube (played by O’Shea Jackson Jr.) will be the main protagonists of the film. Paul Giammati also stars as music managing pioneer, Jerry Heller.
