6 New Summer TV Shows You Should Watch

By Elana Goodwin on May 19, 2015

As all your shows finish airing their season finales, you may find yourself wondering, “What am I going to watch this summer?!”

Well, never fear — here are six summer TV shows premiering this season, starting in June, that you should watch this summer.

1. The Whispers.” This sci-fi supernatural thriller premieres on ABC on June 1, and is based on Ray Bradbury’s 1951 short story “Zero Hour.”

The premise of the series is that a hidden force is influencing children’s actions to do its bidding. It’s a race against time to beat the unseen being that’s trying to destroy the world and save humanity.

Beyond the intriguing premise, “The Whispers” has got a great cast, starring Lily Rabe, Barry Sloane,  Milo Ventimiglia, Derek Webster, Tate Birchmore, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf.

2. Sense8.” The sci-fi drama’s first 12-episode season will be available on Netflix on June 5 and the series was written and executive produced by the creators of “The Matrix” trilogy (so you can expect big things from this show).

The premise of the “Sense8″ is basically that a bunch of people all around the world suddenly find themselves mentally linked, and they have to find a way to survive being hunted by individuals who consider them a threat.

The series stars Jamie Clayton, Max Riemelt, Anupam Kher, Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Aml Ameen, Doona Bae, Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Tina Desai.

3. The Astronaut Wives Club.” Based on the book of the same name by Lily Koppel, “The Astronaut Wives Club” is a drama that will premiere on ABC on June 18. The series centers on seven women who were integral participants in some of the most monumental moments in American history.

As America’s astronauts embarked on risky missions in space, the lives of their young wives changed quickly and drastically, as they became considered American royalty. As their fame rose, and they had to deal with adversity, the wives banded together to overcome whatever life threw their way.

The show boasts a highly talented cast, as it stars Yvonne Strahovski, Odette Annable, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Erin Cummings, Kenneth Mitchell, Wilson Bethel, Evan Handler, Desmond Harrington, Bret Harrison, and Joel Johnstone.

4. Zoo.” This drama thriller premieres on CBS on June 30 and is based on the 2012 thriller novel “Zoo” by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. The TV series follows the same basic plot of the book in that a scientist is searching to figure out what’s causing a series of violent animal attacks, each more complex and brutal than the last. The mystery of what’s behind these vicious animal assaults must be solved before there’s nowhere left for humans to hide.

As a big James Patterson fan and someone’s who read “Zoo” a few years ago, I’m super psyched for this series to come to the small screen this summer. The show stars James Wolk, Billy Burke, Nonso Anozie, Nora Arnezeder, and Kristen Connolly.

5. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” The comedy’s 8-episode season will become available on Netflix on July 17. “First Day of Camp” is a prequel to the 2001 comedy movie “Wet Hot American Summer.” In the movie, which is set on the last day of camp in the summer of 1981, a bunch of counselors attempt to finish all their uncompleted business before the day ends and camp is over.

The Netflix series, as its title suggests, takes place on the first day of camp, and will follow the misadventures of the campers and counselors at Camp Firewood.

The show pretty much boasts the same star-studded cast as the film, as its cast includes Janeane Garofalo, Jason Schwartzman, Paul Rudd, Marguerite Moreau, Christopher Meloni, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Molly Shannon, and Elizabeth Banks.

6. Mr. Robinson.” This comedy premieres later this summer, on August 5, on NBC. It centers on Craig, an unrefined musician, who’s transitioning to his new life as a music teacher at a big-city middle school, and dealing with teacher politics and single moms.

The series stars Craig Robinson (who actually used to teach kindergarden through 8th grade), Tim Bagley, Dante Brown, Peri Gilpin, Ethan Josh Lee, Franchesca Maia, and Jean Smart.

Of course, besides these six new TV shows premiering this summer, there’s a bunch of summer shows returning to air for another season; so whether you choose to dive into a new show or resume following your summer show from last year, you’ve got plenty to watch.
