The 5 Weirdest Scholarships for College

By Breanna Bishop on May 20, 2012

As high school seniors prepare for their graduations and the journey to college, they may also worry about the hefty price tag associated with higher education. Unless they have been saving or have a family who can carry the cost, then most students will rely on financial aid. While federal and private loans may be an option for many, what if you don’t want to carry the burden of owing someone? Grants and scholarships are the best way to fund your education, without having to worry about paying money back after college.

Most grants and scholarships require essays and specific criteria for applicants to meet; many are also highly competitive, which makes some students feel it’s not worth the time and effort. However, there are a few scholarships that require weird skills and interests to qualify. From duck calling to having an odd last name, here are five of the wackiest scholarships for college.

1. American Nudist Research Library

This $1,000 scholarship is specifically for young nudists (high school seniors and college students who have graduated in the past two years). The only things needed are a brief essay and a commitment to live on a nudist colony for a short time.

2. Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest

High school seniors with a passion for duck calling can receive up to $2,000 through the annual duck calling contest, which has already given college-bound students more than $60,000 in scholarships.

3. Tall Clubs International Scholarship

Being tall can earn you up to $1,000 through TCI. The scholarship is given to students under 21 who will be in their first year of college. Those applying for the scholarship must meet a certain height requirement to qualify: a minimum of 5’10″ for women and a minimum of 6’2″ for men.

4. The Billy Barty Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is exclusively for Little People. This renewable $1,000 scholarship require applicants to have proof of being diagnosed with some type of dwarfism.

5. Van Valkenburg Memorial Scholarship

If you happen to be related to the Van Valkenburgs of the Netherlands or their descendants, then you’re eligible to win a $1,000 scholarship from the National Association of the Van Valkenburg Family.
